Left Everything and Followed - Pastor David

This Sunday our English ministry will continue in Luke’s gospel where Jesus calls his first disciples. In this passage from Luke 5 there is an epiphany moment for Peter. He truly realizes who Jesus is, Jesus’ power and authority, and who he, Peter, is relative to Jesus. Peter exclaims, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” But Jesus responds graciously, telling him not to be afraid and that he has a new future. Then Peter and the others leave everything and follow Jesus. I think the big question for us this week is whether we have had that encounter with Jesus. Peter was listening to Jesus teach, knew about Jesus’ miraculous healings, even had Jesus on his boat. But what changed everything was this moment when he truly encounters Jesus.
Let’s gather this week in anticipation and ready to encounter Jesus, ready to explore the depths of our faith beyond accepting Jesus’ teachings or blessings, but to be so overwhelmed by who he is, that we humbly accept his offer and go in a new way, the Way of Jesus.
