Luke 10:38–42 - Faith & Works - Pastor David

This Sunday morning we’ll be considering Jesus’ visit to the home of Martha and Mary. In their home we are invited to consider active and passive aspects of ministry. Shall we be working to prepare and equip for the Lord’s work or sitting and trusting and learning from our Lord? Jesus does not diminish the work of ministry, but challenges us to also consider our need to sit still and listen to him.
Luke includes this story immediately after Jesus’ story of the Good Samaritan and Jesus’ direction to “Go and do likewise [love your neighbor].” Just after a call to love actively, we are invited to consider the good portion of sitting in awe and amazement in the presence of Jesus.
As disciples of Jesus and within His Church we certainly have our own preferences and proclivities when it comes to faith and works, when it comes to sitting in Jesus’ presence and doing Jesus’ work. And yet Luke, by placing these passages together, seems to elevate both.
